Xiao Liu practices his social roles as an artist, curator, and writer. His research moves among contemporary art, the history of technology, and critical theory to examine the conditions under which thought, exchange, and social systems become possible. Xiao Liu situates his thinking at the borders of systems, investigating the possibilities of knowledge and creativity transversally across different fields.
Currently based between Chengdu and New York, Liu’s ongoing projects focus on the intersection of Buddhism and contemporary art, with particular attention to questions of care, self-reproduction, and ethical practice. He approaches Buddhist philosophy as a set of operational logics that inform ways of making, sustaining, and relating. Through curatorial research, writing, and artistic inquiry, his current work asks how spiritual, material, and technological systems might be read together, and what alternative models of value and responsibility could be articulated in relation to contemporary art’s institutional conditions.
